zeplum asked: For straight French history, I always rec Alastair Horne. In depth without being intimidating, and with a wry humor that brings out the lovely wackiness. (Specifically: La Belle France or Seven Ages of Paris)
mjolnirgoesbangbang asked: So I just want to submit this so everyone is actually aware... Alison Weir does not have an actual degree in history and a lot of the information in her books comes from other people's research and not the actual sources themselves. Please keep this in mind when reading one of her works; while they are informative (I own a number myself) they often include information that is now considered...
amooseintexas asked: I also want to pop in and add to you rec list for history books. All of mine are all non-fiction:
For American History:
America's Women: 400 Years of Dolls, Drudges, Helpmates and Heroines by Gail Collins
When Everything Changed: The Amazing Journey of American Women from 1960 to present by Gail Collins ((obviously much more recent than some of the...

mattysones asked: Hi! I'm sorry if this question has been asked. I really really want to get a general understanding of the history of France, but MY SCHOOL HAS NO CLASSES ON FRENCH HISTORY (Oh my heart).
So, does anyone have good, readable books over viewing the history of France? If this question has been asked, please please send me the links to the discussion. Your tag link isn't...

andrhcp asked: Just a comment about Jean-Paul Marat - The David portrait was highly idealized, keeping up with Neoclassical trends. In reality, Marat suffered from a skin condition leading to rashes and was described as “…a horribly ugly little man, almost a dwarf…”
...but we can still crush on great men, even if they are unattractive, no?

ladydilettanti asked: More books:
I read a lot of art-related historical fiction. My most recent favorite is "With Violets" by Elizabeth Robards about Mary Cassatt. Anything by Susan Vreeland is great. "The Forest Lover" was the best, imho. Some other good ones I've read recently are "Black Tower" by Louis Bayard, "Beneath a Marble Sky" by John Shors, and...

ouroboring-deactivated20110923 asked: Re: autobiographies and accurate historical fiction, I really enjoyed Nell Gwyn: Mistress to a King by Charles Beauclerk. She's an incredible character (an angry mob once surrounded her carriage, believing her to be one of Charles II's Catholic mistresses; her response was "You are mistaken; I am the Protestant whore!"), and the book is a good read.
Anonymous asked: I love this blog not just because it has individuals but the historical aspect. I am a historian and we study every aspect of history, it all is history to show an image is not to condone a type behavior. If the blog offends someone for what ever reason then do not follow. I particularly like it. I do not get up an arms if a picture of Andrew Jackson comes up even if I do Native American history....
