The wearer of these magnificent sideburns is Lieutenant-General Augustus Henry Lane-Fox Pitt-Rivers - known as General Pitt-Rivers for short.
Following a successful military career, he came back home, having inherited a huge estate covered in archaeology from Saxon and Roman periods, and proceeded to revolutionise the field of archaeology by excavating parts of his estate until his death in 1900.
He was among the first archaeologists to insist on record objects that weren’t necessarily considered “treasure”, and is known as the Father of Archaeology (or at least, he’s known as that by my Archaeology lecturer).
Personally, I’m mostly just a fan of those sideburns.
