Joseph Needham. He was an amazing scientist who traveled to China during World War II to keep the scientific community alive academically. He traveled to many lesser known corners of the country (at a time when transportation was frustrating, slow, and undependable) to learn more about science in China and eventually wrote several thick tomes about the development of science in China, which really reversed the West’s perception of China being a backwards and dull nation.
