Wilhelm Canaris (1887–1945) was a German admiral, head of the German military intelligence service during WWII and a member of the German Resistance. His personal style as a gentleman was incompatible with the thuggish behaviour of most of the Nazis and his opposition to regime grew after witnessing mass exterminations in Poland. Although no direct link between him and various plots to assassinate Hitler were found, he was found guilty of treason and publicly marched to gallows naked.

When I wrote the latter I was restricted to certain amount of characters. I was hoping people could read between the lines and realize how significant it is that head of Abwehr was opposed to the regime. I’m quite certain he turned a blind eye to the fact that the British had intercepted and turned lot of German spies into double agents and were able to feed Nazis false information this way.
