Our history crush is Loyd Sechrist. He was a US surveyor in Arizona right after statehood and volunteered for the US Engineers Corps. He died at 28 years old when he fell off a cliff during a survey.
This is the best picture we have of him, cropped from an old yearbook photo. We first discovered him in archival correspondence files related to US group surveys of California and Arizona.
