Never been shot down, never lost a wingman. The Soviets hated him so much, they put a bounty of 10,000 rubles on his head. If that doesn’t make him a motherfucking badass, I don’t know what does.

What’s more, he was a total romantic and wrote to his girlfriend, whom he met when he was 17, everyday during the war. They got married and stayed faithful to each other throughout the years, even when the Soviets falsely accused him of war crimes after the war and locked him up in labor camps for 10 years. Cute? I think so.

As for the recent Nazi controversy going on in here, I believe he has a few words of wisdom to offer:

 ”One thing I learned is this: Never allow yourself to hate a people because of the actions of a few. Hatred and bigotry destroyed my nation, and millions died. I would hope that most people did not hate Germans because of the Nazis, or Americans because of slaves. Never hate, it only eats you alive. Keep an open mind and always look for the good in people. You may be surprised at what you find.”
